Children’s early educational experiences can shape both their development and their readiness for future learning. Strong curriculum should nurture the whole child while building foundational knowledge and skills across areas such as language, literacy, math, and science. Yet the quality of these learning opportunities is not consistent across programs or communities, and some children face greater barriers to accessing curriculum and instruction that reflect and support their individual strengths, languages, abilities, and experiences.
In A New Vision for High-Quality Preschool Curriculum, the National Academies examines the research on curriculum for children ages three to five and considers what is needed to better serve all learners. The report offers a framework for rethinking preschool curriculum—from how materials are developed and chosen to how they are put into practice and evaluated—with an emphasis on ensuring every child has meaningful opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive.
